2010 Foundation Events

Family takes Center Stage as the Foundation Hosts a Day of Fun at Jungle Island  

More than 500 people attended the second annual Foundation Family Fun Day on Sunday, April 25, at Jungle Island. The day began with the State of the Medical Center and Foundation addresses, presented by Steven D. Sonenreich, the hospital’s president and chief executive officer, and Mark H. Hildebrandt, Foundation president.

Later, Foundation family members enjoyed a brunch and a brief program that included a warm welcome for new members of the Young Presidents Club and a tribute to outgoing YPC Co-chair Katie Phang-Mager, presented by Michael Shafir, who became co-chair in January.

In addition, 30 children of Mount Sinai employees each received a $2,000 YPC Sons and Daughters Scholarship, in recognition of their academic achievement and community service. The day continued with everyone joining the “Cancer Survivors Day” family picnic in the park in honor of individuals who have successfully undergone cancer treatment at Mount Sinai.

Mount Sinai Medical Center Celebrates its Founders  

Supporters of Mount Sinai Medical Center Foundation walked the red carpet and enjoyed an elegant evening of glamour during the 2010 Founders Celebration at the beautiful Fontainebleau Resort on Saturday, March 20. The Founders Club welcomed 89 new members during the evening, which included an address by Michael M. Adler, chairman of the Mount Sinai Medical Center Board of Trustees. Adler paid tribute to Mark H. Hildebrandt, Foundation president, under whose leadership the Foundation raised $15 million in support of the medical center.

The evening also included performances by Art Poco’s Rat Pack Together Again and the ultimate Beatles cover band, the FabFour, who truly lived up to their name. Special thanks to our very generous friends at Southern Wine & Spirits for providing the evening’s libations, and to Sharon Siegel, Robert Torres and Sheila Orsi at Grande Affaires/DECO Productions for the lovely décor. Thanks as well to the excellent team at the new Fontainebleau, including John Rolfs, Scott Flexman, Jeff Klein, Ileana Herrera and Chefs Sean O’Connell and Simon Bowker.


Young Presidents Enjoy Sexy Saturday Night  

Sexy Saturday Night, the sizzling soiree hosted annually by the Young Presidents Club, brought family members and friends of Mount Sinai Medical Center together for an evening of drinks, dancing and tantalizing treats at LOUIS Nightclub in the Gansevoort on Saturday, February 20. The evening included a presentation of lingerie and swimwear by Betsey Johnson and desserts provided by Jason Starkman and Events Specialist Caron Cole of Epicure Gourmet Market and Cafe. Special thanks to our friends at Southern Wine & Spirits, Miami Magazine, Diana Pavlov and the Opium Group, Red Market, New Urban Farms and L.A. Sweets for their generous support.


Founders Supper Buffet Focuses On Mount Sinai’s New Heart Institute  

Gervasio Lamas, M.D., was the guest speaker during the Founders Supper Buffet on Wednesday, February 17, in the Roni and Samuel Jacobson Eatery. Dr. Lamas, chief of Cardiology at the Mount Sinai Heart Institute, a partnership with New York’s Columbia University, shared insights on how the new partnership will make the hospital’s cardiac program even better than ever. Special thanks to our friends at Southern Wine & Spirits for providing the libations for the evening.


Mount Sinai Dedicates The Donald L. Golden Family Medical Office
Building 
 

On Thursday, February 11, Mount Sinai dedicated the Donald L. Golden Family Medical Office Building. Opened last year, the 106,000-square-foot building is a striking landmark on the Miami Beach skyline that further solidifies Mount Sinai’s position as the region’s leader in health care. An early contact lens pioneer, Dr. Golden and his late wife, Norma, founded D.O.C. Optical Center in Detroit in 1946 and, with his children Michael, Richard and Shelley, and Randall by his side he built it into a multimillion dollar enterprise. Now retired, Dr. Golden and his wife, Marion, split their time between Michigan and Florida.


Boca Raton residents meet and mingle with faculty from the Columbia University Division of Urology at Mount Sinai  

Faculty members of the Columbia University Division of Urology at Mount Sinai were the featured guests at an intimate reception on Thursday, February 4, in Boca Raton. Co-hosted by Nancy and Frank Benson, Jill and Marty Fogelman, and Marcia and Kenny Schack, the event took place in the Schack’s beautiful home in the Polo Club.

Featured faculty included Mitchell C. Benson, M.D., chairman of Urology at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC); Aaron Katz, M.D., director of the Center of Holistic Urology at CUMC; Alan Nieder, M.D., assistant professor of urology at the CUMC Division of Urology at Mount Sinai; Fernando Bianco, M.D., director of robotic surgery at CUMC at Mount Sinai; and Carlos Cordon-Cardo, M.D., Ph.D., professor and vice chair of the Department of Pathology, Department of Urology professor, and associate director of the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at Columbia University.

Guests had the opportunity to learn about the latest developments in laparoscopic-assisted robotic surgery and other minimally invasive urological procedures now available at Mount Sinai. The gathering provided the perfect setting to introduce Boca area physicians and residents to Mount Sinai and showcase the benefits of the hospital’s partnership with Columbia University. Society of Mount Sinai Dinner Party Celebrates the Spirit of Giving  

Mount Sinai paid tribute to its most generous donors on Thursday, January 28, during an intimate dinner party at the historic Bath Club on Collins Avenue. Members, Fellows, Benefactors, Visionaries and Doctors of Philanthropy – all representing the various levels of giving within the Society – had an opportunity to sample an array of hors d’oeuvres and cocktails followed by a delightful dinner in keeping with the Cape Cod theme of the new restaurant. The evening’s entertainment was provided by the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Division of Social Sciences and Life Skills. Special thanks to our friends at Southern Wine & Spirits for providing the evening’s libations.


Young Founders Enjoy the View at Atrio Restaurant and Wine Room  

The Young Founders kicked off 2010 with a night of gourmet food and fine wine at Atrio, the signature restaurant at the Conrad Miami hotel on Brickell Avenue. The restaurant is situated on the 25th floor of the hotel, giving guests a bird’s eye glimpse of the magnificent views of downtown Miami. The dinner, which took place on Tuesday, January 12, featured an array of wonderful hors d’oeuvres, followed by a dinner and wine, provided by our friends at Southern Wine & Spirits.

Morton’s the Steakhouse opens its doors to the YPC and YF  

The Young Presidents Club and Young Founders spent an evening at the NEW Morton’s The Steakhouse on Wednesday, December 2. The event featured Morton’s signature hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, and it provided the perfect opportunity for everyone to network and mingle with old and new friends. It was a fabulous evening! Founders learn the ABC’s of PVD during Opening Supper Buffet  

With lively music in the background and a spirit of camaraderie in the air, the Founders of Mount Sinai opened their social season on Tuesday, November 17, in the George and Marla Bergmann Founders Dining Room. Robert Beasley, M.D., director of Mount Sinai’s Vascular/Interventional Radiology Lab and Evanescence Vein Center and a member of the Founders Club, discussed the latest treatment options for PVD, or peripheral vascular disease in a presentation titled, “The ABC’s of PVD.”


Chef Allen Gives Founders and Young Founders a Delightful Dining Experience  

Founders and Young Founders enjoyed an exquisite Night on the Town at Chef Allen’s Modern Seafood Bistro on Tuesday, October 27. Guests felt right at home in the restaurant’s warm, open, woodsy interior. They were greeted with the legendary chef’s innovative hors d’oeuvres and they sipped martinis and wines made available by our friends at Southern Wine & Spirits.


Young YPC Celebrates the Extraordinary During a Sensational Season Opener  

The Young Presidents Club kicked off the social season on Tuesday, October 6, with a “life less ordinary” at South Beach’s Bancroft Supper Club. Guests enjoyed delectable hors d’oeuvres and sipped Peartinis, the signature drink of the evening – part of the full open bar provided by Southern Wine & Spirits. They also were treated to a glimpse into their future by Psychic Yentas who attended courtesy of event co-host Miami Magazine.


Young Founders experience the “joie de vivre” of Au Pied de Cochon  

The beautiful belle eqopue setting of Au Pied de Cochon transported Young Founders to the City of Lights for a magnificent meal and great company on Tuesday, September 22. Guests enjoyed the exquisite cuisine and energetic atmosphere that has made Au Pied de Cochon the pride of Paris and now the newest jewel of South Beach. Congratulations to Young Founder Michelle Wolfe, who won an Au Pied de Cochon gift certificate during the evening’s festivities.


Young Presidents and Young Founders go Fashion Forward during Networker  

Members of the Young Presidents Club and the Young Founders enjoyed a sneak peek at the fall fashions available at Neiman Marcus Bal Harbour on Tuesday, September 15, during a networker and fashion presentation. More than 100 people filled the store’s designer showroom, where they sampled an array of tasty delights and drinks while mixing and mingling with South Florida’s most dynamic young philanthropists.


Young Presidents and Young Founders Spend an Evening at Segafredo and Primp 

The South Florida heat added extra sizzle to the evening on Thursday, June 11, when the Young Presidents Club and Young Founders turned out for a South Beach networker in two locations. Hosted by Jonathan Babicka, a new member of the YPC, the evening began with signature cosmopolitans and crostini on the patio at Segafredo Española Way and continued with champagne and chocolate at the exclusive opening of Jonathan’s new Primp Salon and Hair Extension Boutique on 15th Street. A good time was had by all.


Philippe prepares a fabulous feast for Founders and Young Founders 

Philippe at the Gansevoort South Hotel provided the perfect setting for the Founders and Young Founders “Night on the Town” on Tuesday, June 2. Diners enjoyed an array of delicious hors d’oeuvres before sitting down to a delectable tasting menu of contemporized Chinese cuisine spiced with an elegant upscale flair.


Foundation Family Fun Day was a huge success! 

More than 650 people attended the first annual Foundation Family Fun Day on Sunday, May 17, at Jungle Island. It was the first time that all of the donor groups within the Foundation joined together for a day of family fun. The day began with a “State of the Medical Center and Foundation Address,” followed by brunch and a special program that included the Young Presidents Club Installation, the Sons and Daughters Scholarship Awards, and the inauguration of the Foundation’s new Projects and Events Committee. After the program, participants joined the “Cancer Survivors Day” picnic in the park with who have successfully undergone treatment at Mount Sinai and members of their families.


Robotic Surgery Takes Center Stage During Founders Closing Supper Buffet 

The Founders Club hosted its closing supper buffet of the season on Thursday, April 30, in the George and Marla Bergmann Founders Dining Room. The evening marked the first supper buffet as Founders co-chairs for Dr. Laurie E. Blach and Jonathan Beloff, who presided over the gathering. Dr. Fernando Bianco, director of the medical center’s new Robotic Surgery Program and an integral part of the newly established Columbia University Division of Urology, was the guest speaker of the evening.


54th Annual Founders Ball – Tango Argentina! 

Dr. Donald L. and Marion Golden are Founders Ball Honorees
The Founders of Mount Sinai experienced the sensuous rhythm of one of the world’s most romantic dances during the 54th Annual Ball on Saturday, March 28. With Tango Argentina! as their theme, the Founders transformed the Hotel InterContinental ballroom into a colorful representation of the famed South American city. Dr. Donald L. and Marion Golden were the evening’s honorees in recognition of the family’s generous support of Mount Sinai.


YPC and Young Founders celebrate luxury and style at Lounge 

Members of the Young Presidents Club and Young Founders were special guests at the official grand opening of Lounge, the hot New York-based clothing emporium, at its new location in the Aventura Mall. The event, which took place on Tuesday, March 10, included a book signing and wine sampling with renowned artist Salvatore Principe.


Founders and Young Founders Sample a Taste of Brazil 

The Founders of Mount Sinai spent a very special evening at Fogo de Chao Churrascaria, a popular Brazilian steakhouse on South Beach. The event, which took place on Tuesday, March 3, was the second installation of the group’s “Night on the Town” dinner series and was attended by Young Founders as well.


YPC Brings Sexy Back to Saturday 

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS is the best way to describe Sexy Saturday Night, the Young Presidents Club’s signature event of the season, which took place on February 28 at SET Nightclub on Lincoln Road. The event featured dancing, drinks and ‘dessert’ – and a rocking fashion presentation by Neiman Marcus Coral Gables.


Young Presidents & Young Founders Savor the Flavor of The Angler’s  

Love was in the air during a pre-Valentine’s Dinner hosted by the Young Presidents Club and the Young Founders on Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 660 Mediterranean Kitchen, the acclaimed restaurant at The Angler’s Boutique Resort.


Founders Supper Buffet 

Dr. Joseph Lamelas, chief of Cardiac Surgery at Mount Sinai, shared the latest advances in minimally invasive surgery during the Founders Supper Buffet on Tuesday, January 27, in the George and Marla Bergmann Founders Dining Room.

Founders Spend an Evening with Dave Barry 

It was a night of big laughs and great camaraderie at the Colony Theater on Thursday, January 22, when the Founders turned out to see funnyman Dave Barry during the South Beach Comedy Festival. Barry, South Florida’s favorite humorist and syndicated columnist, headlined an evening that also included a private wine and cheese reception exclusively for Founders and their guests.

TCL and Ambassadors Host Tender Care and Love Luncheon 

The Cancer Lifeline and the Ambassadors of the Wien Center began the New Year by hosting the 2009 Tender Care and Love luncheon in honor of philanthropist Marion Golden. The event, which took place on Friday, January 9, in Jungle Island’s Treetop Ballroom, featured a special presentation by style icon Carson Kressley, host of Lifetime’s “How to Look Good Naked” formerly of Bravo’s “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.”

YPC and YF ‘Go Italian’ during an evening at Hosteria Romana 

Gina & Marco Efrati opened the doors of Hosteria Romana 2 on Ocean Drive to host a special evening of tasty delights, drinks and networking for the Young Presidents Club and Young Founders on Tuesday, December 2. The Efratis, who are part of the Society of Mount Sinai and the Community Partnership Program, arranged a spectacular evening and a good time was had by all.

Founders Spend “A Night on the Town” at China Grill 

It was a special evening when members of the Founders Club visited China Grill on Monday, December 1, for “A Night on the Town,” the group’s new dinner series hosted at chic local venues.


Young Founders Dinner Series Opens with a Night at Meat Market  

Young Founders were among the first to sample the fare of Meat Market – a new restaurant on Lincoln Road and one of the Foundation’s newest Community Partners – during their opening dinner series event on Tuesday, November 18.

Author Lends Literary Lift to Founders Opening Supper Buffet 

The Founders Club began its social season with a presentation on the difference between minor bouts of forgetfulness verses significant memory loss, on Thursday, November 13, in the Roni and Samuel Jacobson Eatery. Martha Weinman Lear, a veteran health journalist and bestselling author of “Where Did I Leave My Glasses?” was the event’s guest speaker.


Young Presidents Host Parlor Meeting at Mellon Financial Center 

Prospective members of the Young Presidents Club learned about the benefits of being part of the organization on Thursday, October 16, during an intimate parlor meeting at Mellon Financial Center.


YPC Teams with Ocean Drive for its Sizzling Season Opener 

The Young Presidents Club went high fashion with Ocean Drive magazine on Saturday, September 27, at their Season Opener hosted by The Collection in Coral Gables.
